Success for HackJsy Hackathon

Posted: 06/10/2015

The most recent HackJsy Hackathon has been declared a success by organisers following the event which ran over the weekend of 25-27 September.

The 36-hour event, which took place at the Digital Jersey Hub in St Helier, was the first Hackathon to focus on digital health. Participants included designers, developers and digital experts and enthusiasts, who formed teams to create innovative digital health solutions, with the aim of winning the first prize of £1,000.

Eight teams competed in the event, with some even working overnight in the Hub to make sure they completed their product on time.

The winning team – perhaps aptly called It's a Gamble! – took the top prize with their app, Beancon, which can be used to alert emergency services and provide location data from a mobile phone to assist in locating people during distress calls.

Digital Jersey plan to meet with all eight participating teams in the coming months, with the aim of helping to support the innovations further. Following the success of this year’s event, HackJsy have confirmed that they will hold the next Hackathon in March 2016.

Matt Chatterley, speaking on behalf of the organisers of HackJsy Hackathon, commented: “I’m excited by the amazing projects the teams have been able to put together in under 40 hours. If anyone is looking for evidence that there is immense potential for innovation here in Jersey, I certainly don’t feel they will have to look very far. I’m looking forward to seeing how the teams are able to take their products forward in the coming months.”
