Jersey consults on strengthening judicial independence

Posted: 26/06/2017

The Department for Community and Constitutional Affairs has initiated a public consultation on strengthening judicial independence and establishing a Judicial and Legal Services Commission.

The consultation, which will remain open until 4 August 2017, can be accessed by clicking here

It sets out proposals that are intended to confirm and protect the independence of the judiciary in Jersey and establish a clear and transparent legislative framework for the selection, appointment and tenure of the judiciary and Law Officers.

The Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, commented: “I encourage members of the public, the legal profession and the judiciary to engage and respond. It is only through hearing the views of the public that we can give further consideration to the proposals and bring forward amendments where necessary.”
