Sixth formers planning to go on to higher education in September have only a few days left to apply for a bursary with professional services firm KPMG.

The firm awards a bursary each year to local students who have been accepted by their chosen university. The successful students need to be able to demonstrate that they have a range of skills and abilities and possess the ambition and motivation to study towards an accountancy or tax qualification after completing their degree.

Debbie Smith, KPMG's HR Executive Director, said: “I know that many students will be in the process of making important decisions about their careers so this is a particularly stressful time for them. We have a comittment to lifelong learning and personal development through our scheme and hope that those individuals considering a career within a professional services firm will apply for our bursary.

“Not only do we offer bursary students financial support, paid work experience and student mentor support throughout their degree but we also help them build a professional relationship with a local employer which establishes a great building block for any budding post graduate.”

Former Ladies' College student Sophie Ferreira is in her final year of her law degree as a KPMG bursary recipient.

“The work experience I have gained as a result of the scheme has been invaluable and has taught me a lot about accountancy first-hand. This will certainly help me make a balanced decision about my future career,” said Miss Ferreira.

During the Summer Miss Ferreira will be trekking along the Great Wall of China for Childreach International and has so far raised £2,450.

“I was also really lucky to receive a donation from KPMG for this charity which was extremely generous of the firm and also showed their support for me as well as their dedication to charitable giving,” she said.

Students who are awarded a bursary will be given the chance to develop an understanding of the work KPMG does in the Islands as well as the professional qualifications they may wish to study in the future.

Each student receives £1,500 each year to go towards the costs of books and other expenses as well as four weeks' paid work experience with the firm.

The closing date for applications is Friday 18 May. Students wishing to apply for the bursary must have 300 UCAS points and grade B or above in GCSE English and Maths.

If interested in applying students should contact Dominique Aylett, HR Assistant or email careers@kpmg.guernsey.gg to request an application form.
