BL71_1_BL_COVERIssue 71 of Businesslife, a special edition on digitalisation, is now available online.

The Covid-19 pandemic has hastened the need for digital transformation across business sectors, according to a variety of consultancies and researchers – but firms across the Channel Islands are responding at speed, the latest edition of Businesslife finds.

This special edition, out now, explores a host of digital-related issues and topics, ranging from how businesses have increased customer communication during periods of lockdown and restricted movement, to cyber security, business transformation and the sectors benefiting most from digital transformation.

Jon Watkins, Editor-in-Chief of Businesslife, said: “Digital transformation and the opportunities on offer to businesses from automating and digitalising elements of their operations were already high on the boardroom agenda pre-Covid. But the pandemic has heightened awareness of the need to transform, and elevated the issue for all sectors.

“We wanted to explore that in detail – looking at the opportunities for Channels Islands firms and for investors looking to identify growing digitally powered sectors.”

Fintech fuel

One sector that has long been focused on digital development is the financial services sector, and in this issue we explore how fintech firms are helping traditional players juggle the need to automate with the need to retain traditional customer service values.

Our article finds that the Channels Islands are proving a hotbed for development – fuelled by a positive regulatory landscape, a strong talent pool and an appetite for change.

Meanwhile, our article on digital transformation across the islands finds that many firms are performing a juggling act of different proportions – how to plan for long-term digital transformation while also dealing with the short-term pressures created by recent uncertainty.

Sectors on the rise

We also look at some notable sectors that have benefited from consumers’ greater acceptance of digital service during the pandemic.

The added pressure placed on doctors’ surgeries and hospitals, together with consumers’ willingness to ‘go digital’, for example, has seen a huge uplift in remote consultations through private healthcare apps and online platforms.

The pace at which the sector has evolved, and the appetite with which people have adopted remote services, delivers real food for thought for other sectors that have traditionally relied on in-person activity – as well as putting the healthcare sector firmly in the sights of investors looking to ride the wave of rapid growth.
