League of Friends Wins Condor Ferries Community AwardThe League of Friends has won the Condor Ferries Community Award 2011, just beating the two other shortlisted candidates: the Jersey Special Gymnastics Club and Brian Curtis of Community Savings, to first place.

Mrs Carole Penfold of the League of Friends, accepted the award from Steve Bailey Condor Ferries' Jersey Director, at a packed Jersey Enterprise Awards Gala Ball, last night.

The League of Friends won the award for the organisation's tireless work raising money for Jersey's hospitals. In just over three decades, the League, which is an entirely voluntary organisation, has raised more than £700,000 through its shop and café at Jersey General Hospital as well as the trolley rounds it operates at the hospital and two day centres in the Island.

“The League of Friends' achievements over the past thirty years have been hugely impressive and have helped thousands of islanders,” said Steve Bailey. “In the last two years alone, they have agreed to purchase two kidney dialysis machines, provided a donation of £30,000 towards the cost of a baby transport system and have purchased two stretchers to help with the transport of patients to the UK.

“As Islanders, we know the League best for its shop and café. I think people would be surprised to learn just how much the League has helped the hospital to develop its resources for the benefit of everyone in Jersey.”

Mrs Penfold of the League of Friends said, “I'm so pleased to be able to accept the Condor Ferries Community Award on behalf of everybody who works so hard for the League of Friends.

“The League is focused entirely on helping to fund facilities within Jersey's hospitals and care centres. It is down to the tireless efforts of our volunteers that we have had so much success in buying and funding equipment for the hospital and I hope we'll be able to continue for many decades to come.”
