Posted: 29/09/2021

MartinMoloney_JFSCThe Jersey Financial Services Commission (JFSC) is hosting a global webinar on fraud and scams next week to mark World Investor Week, an international campaign to raise awareness about investor education and protection.

Streamed live on 7 October between 13:00 and 14:00, the webinar – entitled Fraud has no borders – will be free to attend.

It will bring together panellists from America, South Africa and Jersey to look at how fraud and scams are affecting these jurisdictions. They include:
• Martin Moloney (pictured), IOSCO Secretary General and former JFSC Director General
• Diane Maxwell, JFSC Director of Policy and Risk
• Chief Inspector Chris Beechey, States of Jersey Police
• Elliot Modisa, South Africa Financial Sector Conduct Authority
• Dan Rutherford, Associate Director, US Commodity Futures Trading Commission
• Christine Kieffer, US Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.

They will discuss the international reach of fraudsters, their criminal conduct in an increasingly digitalised world, and the psychological impact these crimes have on victims.

The event is one of a number of international activities to mark World Investor Week, organised by the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO). The JFSC is among 230 jurisdictions taking part in the annual campaign.

Diane Maxwell, the JFSC’s Director of Policy and Risk commented: “Financial fraud is increasingly sophisticated and widespread, targeting all demographics and impacting people of all ages. For victims who may lose their life savings and family home, the impact can be devastating. We are hoping webinars like these will better equip people to recognise fraud and act.”

Pasquale Munafò, Chairman of IOSCO's Committee on Retail Investors, added: “We are grateful to Jersey for hosting this webinar to raise awareness about fraud and scams – one of our key messages for this year’s World Investor Week. As the webinar’s title suggests, the borderless nature of fraud and scams is a concern for many retail investors and regulators.”

During the campaign week, from 4 to 8 October, the JFSC will share resources on its website and social media channels about how islanders can protect themselves against fraud and scams, as well as information about current trends that are occurring in the Island.
