The Collas Crill STEP lecture series will feature two topics significant to the trust industry in Guernsey in May.

On 2 May, Steve Williams, Director of European Affairs at the Channel Islands Brussels Office, will deliver an evening lecture on the current priorities and future challenges for the Channel Islands and its relationship with the European Union (EU). Mourant Ozannes partner St John Robilliard will present the lunchtime lecture on 3 May on the subject of Ending a Trustee Relationship.

‘The Channel Islands and European Union – current priorities and future challenges', will detail the work of the Brussels office and how it promotes and protects the islands' interests in Europe. The lecture will cover key issues, including the Eurozone debt crisis, and their implications for the Channel Islands.

Mr Williams joined the Brussels Office as Director of European Affairs in 2011. Prior to this, he had worked for the British Diplomatic Service for 30 years, most recently as British Ambassador to Bulgaria. Mr Williams has also held positions in the British Embassies in Oslo and Buenos Aires and at the UK Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels. In London, he has been Deputy Director of EU Affairs and Americas Director of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Collas Crill senior associate, Karen Farman, said: “Steve Williams has extensive experience and expertise in issues relating to the Channel Islands and its relationship with the European Union which I'm sure will make for an insightful lecture into the challenges we face now and those we will have to face in the future.”

Advocate Robilliard's lecture will examine the ending of a trustee relationship, covering topics including resignation versus removal, the trustee as appointer of its successor, effectively handing over trust property to the new trustee, duty to provide information to the new trustee and the trustees' lien. Indemnities and disputed fees and other costs will also be covered.

Advocate Robilliard attended Cambridge University and went onto the University of Manchester to lecture in Law. In 1987, he moved to work with a specialist law firm in Jersey operating in tax, trust and corporate fields and following this, joined the Mourant Ozannes litigation department specialising in trust and related matters.

Having qualified as a Barrister (England) and an Advocate (Guernsey), Advocate Robilliard is an Academician of the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law, a member of STEP and an International member of the Chancery Bar Association.

STEP Chairman, Paul Hodgson said: “St John's lecture will be extremely valuable for trust practitioners. It's essential for trustees to know how to build and develop trustee relationships but also know how to bring them to an end and take the appropriate steps for the next trustee to fulfill their new duties. Both St John and Steve are high caliber speakers and we expect the talks to be interesting and well attended.”

The evening lecture begins at 5.30pm at the OGH Hotel and the lunchtime lecture at 12 noon. The seminars, which last around 45 minutes, each cost £20 for members, £30 for non-members and £10 for students.
