Opportunities exist for the Channel Islands and Malaysia to work closer together to service Malaysian clients, says Collas Crill partner Sean Cheong (pictured).

Ms Cheong is among those welcoming a delegation from the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) when they visit Guernsey at the end of the month.

"Malaysia is a sophisticated market; indeed the market leader in Islamic finance offerings in Asia," she said. "Guernsey, with its highly developed funds industry and Shariah expertise can offer its funds expertise to managers looking to access European markets with their Shariah compliant funds. There are also opportunities for Malaysian companies raising capital in London on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) using a Guernsey holding company."

Collas Crill currently services its Malaysian client base from its office in Singapore, which Ms Cheong – who is Malaysian by birth and first qualified as a lawyer in Kuala Lumpur - set up in August 2012.

With a delegation from MATRADE visiting the island this month, Collas Crill looks forward to developing even closer links with the country, which is highly rated for its rapid expansion and economic resilience within the region.
