The Collas Crill STEP Guernsey July lecture series will focus on Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) requests and private trust companies (PTC). On 4 July, Jon Richards, senior investigation officer at Guernsey Border Agency, will deliver the lunchtime lecture on Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) requests. Daniel Uger, senior associate at Lawrence Graham LLP, will deliver the evening lecture on 4 July on a best practice perspective for private trust companies. ‘Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty Requests – A Guernsey Case', will explore and define MLAT and how Guernsey authorities deal with them. The responsibilities of the financial services provider (FSP) holding material relevant to the request will also be explored using a case study to look at the process of the request through to the impact it had to the FSP. Mr Richards has 25 years' experience within the Guernsey Border Agency having spent the last eight and a half years working at senior office level. During his time with the Guernsey Border Agency, Mr Williams has worked in both the Financial Criminal and the Drugs and Target teams where he managed a team of officers involved in proactive target operations and investigations of serious drug trafficking cases. Collas Crill partner, Gareth Bell, said: “I am sure Jon's lecture will be extremely insightful and will delve into an interesting area that many practitioners know little about.” Mr Uger's lecture will advise on best practice structuring, whether PTCs are over-used and other issues that should be taken into account when setting up a PTC. His role as senior associate at Lawrence Graham's Private Capital team involves dealing with international succession planning, family governance matters, and advising on the UK tax implications associated with investing in the UK and moving to or leaving the UK. Mr Uger has a particular focus on Asian based clients and often is involved in putting in place structures that deal with the succession of family businesses. STEP chairman, Paul Hodgson, said: “Private trust companies have become increasingly popular over the last decade or so but there is question as to who they are best suited to. Daniel brings with him a wide array of experience and I'm sure his lecture will be very informative and will provide a rounded understanding as to how to use PTCs for best practice”. The evening lecture begins at 5.30pm at the OGH Hotel and the lunchtime lecture at 12 noon. The seminars, which last around 45 minutes, each cost £20 for members, £30 for non-members and £10 for students. For more information and to reserve seats contact: fionaroberts@newtelsurf.com.
