The Collas Crill STEP Guernsey April lecture series will feature two topical issues relevant to investors in Guernsey.

On 11 April Russell Bussey, IPS Capital head of sales, and James Painter, Enhance Group Limited managing director, will deliver the Introduction to Indices evening lecture. Collins Stewart's Justin Oliver will deliver the lunchtime lecture on 12 April on the basics of investing.

‘The STEP Trustee Managed Portfolio Indices – an introduction to STEP members on this free service' will focus on the history and background to indices and their use for members and practitioners.

With over 30 years' experience in the private client industry, Mr Bussey has held director level positions with Kleinwort Benson, UBS and Credit Suisse where he was head of sales and marketing. He has also been a main awards judge for the Society of Trust Estate Practitioners (STEP) since their inception.

Having worked in the finance sector for over 20 years, Mr Painter has extensive experience both monitoring and managing investment portfolios. Prior to joining Enhance Investments, he was senior manager of investor services at Equity Trust, responsible for the monitoring and analysis of portfolios for trusts based in the British Isles, Switzerland and the Caribbean. He previously worked as a discretionary portfolio manager for the Royal Bank of Canada and ABN AMRO in Zurich and has been awarded the Personal Charter for the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment.

Zoë Cousens, Investment Consultant at Collas Crill Trust, said: “Between them, both James and Russell have over 50 years' experience in the finance and private client industries and given their knowledge and expertise, I'm sure it will prove to be an insightful lecture into the concept and uses of indices.”

Mr Oliver's lecture will discuss the basic rules of investment and the issues which fiduciaries should consider before establishing an investment strategy. He will also examine the potential benefits and drawbacks of the main asset classes, highlighting the role which each may play in pursuing particular investment objectives.

Having worked at Collins Stewart for over 13 years, Mr Oliver manages several of the Collins Stewart Select Funds as an investment director.

A Chartered Fellow of the Channel Islands Securities Institute, and a former institute Guernsey president, Mr Oliver also holds the fund selection committee deputy chairman and is a member of the asset allocation committee.

STEP Chairman, Paul Hodgson, stressed the importance of the basics of investing and said it shouldn't be missed by anyone involved in fiduciary work.

“Mr Oliver's lecture will be extremely valuable to anyone wishing to go back to the basic rules of investment and to discuss the issues that can arise. All three speakers that we have managed to secure are of high calibre and we expect both the events to be very popular.”

The April evening lecture begins at 5.30 pm at the OGH Hotel and the lunchtime lecture at 12 noon. Both the lunchtime and evening 45 minute seminars each cost £20 for members, £30 for non-members and £10 for students.
