2021 IoD Convention to focus on Guernsey global brand

Posted: 26/07/2021

The Institute of Directors in Guernsey has confirmed that the theme for its 2021 Annual Convention will be sustainability and how it underpins the island’s global brand and wider economy.

Taking place on Thursday 14 October at Beau Sejour, the event is entitled Can a Small Island Make a Big Impact on a Global Issue?’.

The event will develop political scientist Simon Anholt’s Nation Brands concept, which ranks countries’ attractiveness and success based on six key areas – people, tourism, exports, governance, investment and immigration, and culture and heritage.

In a break from the format of previous IoD Conventions, the themes will be explored in a series of short TED-style talks.

Wendy Dorey_jul21The audience will hear from Tom Rivett-Carnac, one of the architects of the Paris Climate Agreement, a founding partner of Global Optimism and co-author of The Future We Choose. Tom is also advising the UK government on COP26, to be held in November.

Wendy Dorey (pictured), Chair of IoD Guernsey, said: "We have a real opportunity to redefine Guernsey’s 'nation brand', where we are no longer seen as a tax haven, but as a net contributor to society and the world.

"Our green finance credentials, coupled with an abundance of natural capital, have the potential to become real economic multipliers - allowing us to create lasting value that can’t be eroded.

"With COP26 around the corner, now is the time to ensure our actions create a sustainable future for Guernsey."

More speakers will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
