JT have announced a new partnership with Fon which will dramatically increase the availability of free Wi-Fi for its broadband customers, both in Jersey and when roaming. The free Wi-Fi system is already working successfully, with around 12.6m hotspots around the world and 500,000 in London alone. The new system involves JT customers sharing a small portion of the bandwidth from their home router, so that others that are on the Fon network can use it free of charge when they are in range. Barna Kutvolgyi, Managing Director for JT's Global Consumer Unit commented: “I'm delighted to be able to announce this partnership with Fon today, as it will dramatically increase the availability of free Wi-Fi to JT customers, both at home, and when they are roaming, which should really help to bring costs down for travellers. “Once we have completed the installation of the fibre network, it will effectively mean that free Wi-Fi is available right across the island. I think that will be really useful for Islanders; JT is providing networks which are making Jersey one of the most connected places in the world”. Alex Puregger, COO for Fon said: "We're really happy about this new partnership. Jersey is a beautiful island and as a popular travel destination, we see lots of benefits for both our members and JT's when abroad. Fon is looking forward to establishing itself in such a great place!” The Fon technology will be available to all JT Broadband customers on the new fibre-optic network; currently, around 29% of JT's Broadband customers have been switched to the new fibre network, with that number increasing every month and the project due for completion in 2016.
