Jake Delbridge's presentation, following his time at the States of Guernsey Education Department, won him top spot at the Institute of Directors Management Shadowing Awards evening last month.
One of the six finalists shortlisted in the Institute of Directors management shadowing scheme, Jake discussed his time shadowing Education's chief officer Jon Buckland.
His speech used devices such as a football analogy to put across his experiences to the audience and the evening's judging panel, comprising: Brooke Kenyon, consultant at Orchard PR; Mark Palfrey, vice chairman of the Institute of Directors in Guernsey; Alex Rodger, chairman of Collas Crill; and Debbie Smith, executive director of HR at KPMG in the Channel Islands.
The scheme, sponsored by KPMG, provided over 70 students with the opportunity to gain valuable managerial skills and business insight by shadowing managers from a range of local organisations.
The six shortlisted students were Fareed Anees, Nicola Bourne, Luke Bridle, Clara Coleman, Jake Delbridge and Ben Green and each made presentations at the event, discussing their experiences with their respective organisations, which included legal firm Babbé, the Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authority (CICRA) and the GTA University Centre.
The host of the evening, Martyn Mann of the IoD committee, was impressed by the standard of presentations by all of the finalists.
“The students have really outdone themselves and the evening saw six outstanding presentations. It really underlines how worthwhile the scheme is, as well as reminding us that there are some very talented young people on the island who deserve to be given these opportunities.”
Mr Delbridge was thrilled with his victory on the night and found his time at the Education Department to be particularly relevant and inspiring.
“I couldn't believe I had won, it is a huge confidence booster. I found my shadowing experience extremely useful and this has been the perfect conclusion. I would definitely recommend the scheme to others.”
The Institute of Directors in Guernsey has been running the scheme annually for a number of years and welcomes the participation of companies and students who wish to gain valuable work experience.
Debbie Smith was pleased to see another successful conclusion to the scheme:
