Carey Olsen conference to focus on incoming GDPR regulation

Posted: 03/04/2017

The potential impact of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on Jersey businesses will be the main focus of a Carey Olsen half-day conference later this month.

During the conference, which is free to attend, delegates will receive presentations from government bodies and industry authorities.

The European Union’s GDPR comes into effect from 25 May 2018 and introduces new accountability obligations, stronger rights for individuals over their personal data and restrictions on international data flows.

Similar legislation will be introduced in Jersey and Guernsey and will affect all local businesses regarding the way they handle personal data.

Speakers will include representatives from the Office of the Information Commissioner, the States of Jersey, C5 Alliance and Carey Olsen. They will look at the latest developments in legislation, the challenges it will present and what steps companies need to take to prepare for the new regime.

Carey Olsen Counsel Huw Thomas said: "Although May 2018 seems a long way off, it is not. It is essential that in practical terms we are all ready. Jersey and Guernsey intend to have equivalent legislation in place and so GDPR will impact on all of us in some way.

“A key aspect of protecting our position as a jurisdiction and as individual businesses will be by sharing ideas and collaborating with local businesses in the months to come."

• The conference takes place on Thursday 20 April at The Royal Yacht Hotel from 8am until 12.30pm. To register or for more information contact Eilish Ashworth at Carey Olsen on tel 01481 732018 or email eilish.ashworth@careyolsen.com
